St James’ Park from the top of the car park on Percy Street, looking past Eldon Gardens car park.

Still ignoring the football. I like the pic, though.

Two picture Sunday – Man with Pigeons

I never spotted this statue for years. I only noticed it a couple of months ago.

pigeon2Apparently it’s not in its original place – some people tried to steal it and it ended up being relocated. But it’s been where it is now for over a decade.

The hubby’s lived in Newcastle just about all his life. He’d never seen it before either. Was there something in front of it until recently?

The view from my friend’s flat the other evening. I think it’s fantastic, but she wasn’t overly impressed. What do you think?

You can see the Get Carter car park towards the right of the picture. It was scheduled to be demolished last year, but it’s still standing.

I never noticed this ceiling until recently. It’s in Waterstones… there are books. They tend to monopolize my attention. Worth looking up for though isn’t it?

The inside of Haymarket bus station.

The ceiling used to be nice, before the panes of glass started falling out and they had to put netting under it all to stop it injuring random pedestrians. See here. Apparently work to replace the ceiling will start soon.

Make it Back at Borders Silverlink

My fab author friend Sarah Shaw recently held a book signing here at Borders Silverlink.  In her own words from her blog,

“I signed copies of my novel for customers at Borders in the Silverlink retail park. The most enjoyable thing about signings is meeting people who work in the store as well as shoppers. Glamorous, friendly Dawn had arranged a vase of roses on the table displaying Make It Back.”

Her novel, Make it Back, was published by Tonto at the begining of the year and is available on Amazon.

Book description: In 1937, Muriel leaves her family in England to nurse children trapped in the Spanish Civil War. Braving the fascist bombardment, she becomes determined to help one injured boy find his sister – but she can never forget her own abandoned daughter. More than forty years later, Dee follows in the footsteps of her grandmother, inspired to overcome the hurt of rejection by her older lover and take a few risks in sex and war. Two generations apart, Muriel and Dee are driven into passion and danger in the heat and dust of south-eastern Spain. ‘If you like a good story with great characters, if you enjoy a really good read, then you will love Sarah Shaw’s “Make It Back”.

Since looking for old photos of Newcastle, I’ve been enjoying pictures of things you might miss if you don’t keep your eyes open. The shop at the bottom isn’t terribly appealing, but look to the top of the building! It’s quite impressive. Just a shame that it hasn’t been well kept.

The building is opposite Haymarket Bus Station.

Percy Street from above

percy-streetAs taken from the top of the car park that’s on the first photo here.

I’d also just like to say – I love this site. I love wandering the streets of Newcastle taking photos of things. I’ve just spent an age trying to find photos of an old comic shop (Timeslip, for anyone who’s interested) for D, my husband, and come up with nothing. But we’ve found all sorts of other stuff – and it’s fascinating, finding all these old pictures and seeing how things have changed. It’s nice to think that the pictures I take today might be interesting to someone next month, next year, next decade… even next century. Not even for any great photographic merit – but just to see how things have changed.

Two Picture Sunday – Thomas Bewick – Site of Workshop

I’d never heard of Thomas Bewick until I saw this monument round the back of St Nicholas Cathedral. He was an ornithologist and wood engraver who lived from 1753 – 1828.

There is a Bewick Society whose aim ‘is to promote an interest in the life and work of Thomas Bewick and related subjects, especially with regard to wood-engraving.’

Eldon Square Bus Station

weird-loosIt took me a minute to work out what these doors were for. I’m not sure I like them, but they’re definitely striking…. although I’m pretty concerned about the small child being flung around by his/her arm!

The connection to Thursday’s post wasn’t deliberate – but these toilets are at Eldon Square Bus Station.
