The last time I posted the Tyne God (a little over a year ago) I mentioned that the Tyne God is my favourite thing in Newcastle.  I also asked for your favourite things/places.  It’s good to revisit sometimes, so I ask again, what are your favourite things/places in Newcastle?

I bet if we ask nicely, Beth would try to get shots of things that haven’t been featured here yet. :)

  1. Oooh what a good idea! Can’t wait to hear what people think :)

  2. Tough choice. One of my favourite things was a small gate in town moor. The fence around it had long been demolished, just the gate stayed there in the middle of the meadow, looking rather surreal. Last time I went there (almost 5 years ago), the gate had gone, too.
My favourite place probably is Jesmond Dene, with all the tiny bridges crossing the brook. I tried to make up a jogging route that went over all of them, but it never really worked out. There’s one certain spot with only some large blocks as stepping stones, might be my favourite of favourites.
Or Blackfriars’. Or the castle keep. Or the long stairs down to Quayside. Or… whatever.

  3. Jesmond Dene without a doubt. For me its not just a favourite place in Newcastle- but simply a favourite place anywhere! I visit Newcastle once or twice a year and spent a lot of time in the Dene. (its handy because my family lives close by). We have a trip home coming up at the end of July and that will be the first place I head to. My kids love it there too.

  4. Love the second shot Cassandra – never stood underneath to look at this before and didn’t realise there was so much detail in the face. Thank you!

  5. My favourite place in Newcastle is actually Grey Monument. I’d love to climb up there and admire a view of Newcastle from there. Ciao. A.

  6. I can remember climbing up the staircase inside the monument a number of times in the ’70s. Sadly I have no memory of what the view was like! I wonder whether access is allowed now.

  7. This is a very difficult question Cassandra! In no particular order, I’m going to say the River Tyne and quayside generally; Greys Monument; Northumberland Street; the City Hall. Favourite pubs: The Bodega and The Trent House. Favourite Cinema: The Classic screen at the Tyneside.

I’ve just realised all the above is far too general. I’ll think some more and get back to you ;)

  8. every so often they open it up PJF. if you come over to facebook (link top right) and we can get a group together they will open it for us. i really really wanna! anyone up for it?

  9. Keep ‘em coming people. I’ll do what I can :)

  10. I agree with Dave’s suggestions, especially City Hall and Trent House. However I have not been in either place in at least 20 years. What I am realising is that my faviourite places are closely tied to great memories e.g. loads of great concerts at the City Hall.

  11. Funnily enough I went to the Trent House last night; first time for maybe six months or so. It’s still good, but it’s changed hands and has lost a little bit of it’s charm for me. It has a wine list on the bar, which doesn’t seem right for that place!
