The Telegraph
I’ve saved my favourite until last. I don’t go there very often, but I can remember actually being in The Telegraph a couple of times in the last couple of years. That’s about as much as I’ve been anywhere I think… I do go regularly to the Union Rooms, but that’s just for convenience when meeting friends to go out for tea.
The roof terrace upstairs in the Telegraph is fantastic – do go and sit up there if you get a chance to on a sunny evening.

Nice shot, Beth, you got the whole lot in. Most pictures I have seen of the Telegraph ignore the roof and I love the shape. This was our meeting place in the 60s on Wednesday and Saturday night before a trip along the road to the New Orleans Jazz Club for a session with the Mighty Joe Young Jazz Band. I remember the Telegraph had a bar where most of the postmen drank and a lounge where for a penny a pint more you got waitress service.
Thanks Alf! It was a grey day but I do still like the pic. where was the jazz club… actually is that the one down pink lane that’s still there???
It was originally called the Hawthorn Inn at the top of Forth Banks. In a later incarnation it was an Indian restaurant but it now appears to be Sachins, a Punjabi restaurant. The New Orleans was in the basement of the pub. It was a magical place, just about the only place you could hear jazz in those days. It was run by a Pole called Jurich and I could tell you many tales of the place but they will have to keep for another day. Alan Price was a regular visitor just after he quit the Animals.
thanks Alf! I will have to go exploring…
