Tyne Crossings Week: Bambuco Bridge

Australian company, Bambuco, used 20 tons of bamboo to create a massive temporary bridge between the Tyne Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

The eighth Newcastle/Gateshead bridge or Bambuco Bridge was a temporary outdoor sculpture in the form of a simple suspension bridge spanning the River Tyne, England, made entirely from bamboo wood. The public art was designed and built for the SummerTyne festival, part of the NewcastleGateshead initiative.

The bridge was on display over the festival’s opening weekend – though crossing was strictly reserved for the skilled Bambuco team!

Queen Elizabeth II Metro Bridge

This is a pic taken coming out of the Metro tunnel in Gateshead, about to cross the Tyne to Newcastle. The bridge is the QE II Metro Bridge.

I didn’t mean to start a week of Tyne crossings (and South to North Tyne crossings at that!). Hmmm. I’ll see what other Tyne crossing pictures I have… although I may already have exhausted my supply.

Tyne Tunnel

It’s incredibly difficult to take a decent picture in the Tyne Tunnel. You’re moving, you’re in a car, the air – I feel that word should be in quote marks – is smoky, you have no time to get it right. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but without repeated passes through the Tunnel I don’t think I’m going to get a better grab than this. For more pics – travelling from South to North – see my flickr photostream.

Thanks so much to Cassandra for giving me a break last week! I’ve had an awful lot going on recently – nothing wrong; just me taking on too much – and a little space was just what I needed. I really enjoyed seeing someone else’s perspective on Newcastle.

Bit of a free for all today, as it’s the last day that Beth is away.  let’s all welcome her back tomorrow!

The first photo is of the Cathedral Church of St. Mary just across from Central Station and the Center for Life is in the back there on the left.

The second photo is a panoramic of the Tyne.  Click it to view a larger version on my flickr.  You can even download the larger version, too!

Lots of Newcastle Uni students will be making this trip very soon.  First, they will get off the metro at Haymarket station and climb these stairs (or take the newly renovated escalators more likely) and then head to the Newcastle University campus.  At the beginning of the term, there are tents of posters to sell and people dressed in promotional gear for the various clubs, societies, sport, and of course the various pubs and clubs around the city centre.

To go along with Beth’s posting of the view from Starbucks last friday, here’s two shots of Central Station.  The first was taken looking east in front of the Center for LIFE and the second was taken under the great arch also looking east towards St. Nicholas Cathedral, whose spire is lit up red by the setting sun.
