The Bacchus
This was taken on the Historic Pubs walk on the Tyne and Wear Heritage Open Days. I can’t find any of my notes at the mo, but at some point soon I’ll dig them out and post some of the things I learned over on my blog.

Good snap of a cool, historic building. I do wonder what businesses are inside …
Nice…
Is that the one somewhere near Bigg Market?
Just around the corner in High Bridge, Dave. It was one of my favourite pubs about 20 years ago when I worked in the city centre. I still make an annual pilgrimage to the Bacchus around Christmas time to meet up with old friends and colleagues. It looks better in your picture, Beth, than it did when I used to frequent it.
Leif – it’s a pub! ie a drinking establishment
I’ve only been in once, but I enjoyed that visit, and I’ve heard good things. I plan to go back sometime!
What Alf said Dave!
It just came back to me that in my younger days this was always referred to as the new Bacchus as the old Bacchus was in Newgate Street and was demolished in 1971 to make way for Eldon Square. Progress – who can say?
That wasn’t even mentioned on the historic pubs walk – I’m very disappointed!
Alf,
I am beginning to think you had the same misspent youth as myself. I worked in offices above the .New Bacchus’ as then called and yes I went to t’other one too.

Cheers Alf; yes I’m sure I’ve been here too, but it didn’t look like that. I’m guessing it’s been done up relatively recently?
Used to go there every so often for gourmet lunch, as it was fab! However, they must have sacked the chef and hired a cook as the food has gone downhill
By the way B, I hear on the grape-vine, Vulcan has had an interesting ‘update’…
Mike
So it has! I took a pic a couple of weeks ago and then completely forgot! I’ll have to post it
“Make it so, Number One.”
Quoting TNG?
Have I just outed myself as sad for recognising it????
