Silverlink Borders is now HMV/Waterstones

For those like me, who were devastated when Borders closed its doors – HMV/Waterstones has now taken over the building. Paperchase and Starbucks are back, but the layout has changed quite drastically.

I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it.

  1. Beth, just be grateful it is open again. There is no sign of similar things happening with the Gateshead branch.

  2. Long live hmv! I’ve bought there many cheap CD’s (in London) because of VAT-reduction.

  3. At least there is somewhere to get a coffee now – I stopped by the other day just to get a coffee and was devastated… I may even have bought a book!

  4. Well, at least it has not been taken over by Primark or something like that! Here in York the ex Border store still looks empty and miserable…

  5. This is great news – as the above say, at least it has been reopened as something decent and you can still get a coffee. I was devasted too when Borders shut its doors – but as Antonella says, something like another Primarni would be hard to take!

  6. Its about time hmv opened up here, silverlink is practically clothing with exception of a few stores. The majoriety of none clothing stores are rubbish (carpets/beds and currys) so bad i can’t remebmer most of their names.

Wouldn’t mind a proper restauraunt or something opening up

  7. We were meant to be getting a Borders here in Nottingham, but obviously not now. When Virgin closed it’s doors the shop was taken over by HMV. I prefer Fopp (also HMV) as the prices are a couple of pounds cheaper than HMV & they have lots of £3 specials.

  8. alf, yes, i should count the small mercies. what a shame the gateshead branch is still empty :(
i do like hmv steffen… i just wish i could have borders back too.
sam – a coffee will solve most of life’s little problems :)
antonella – oh god yes. i do hate primark. i was in york a few weeks ago and walked past the old borders… so sad. i used to love the starbucks in there too, it was amazing. i hope someone takes it on soon.
    too right dave, too right.
do you think a restaurant would fit steven? i’m not sure but then frankie and bennys next to the cinema seems to do quite well. maybe it would be good. but then maybe now hmv/waterstones is back D and i would never leave and we’d end up bankrupt. swings and roundabouts i guess :)
gailsman the virgin/zavvi on northumberland street is FINALLY having work done to it. never heard of fopp?

  9. Borders is a big miss – it had a certain atmosphere and was a pleasure to browse round. Waterstones just doesn’t have it! It would be a very good idea to have magazines as I think these are a great miss, as do many of my friends and aquaintances. Even though you need a second mortgage for a Starbucks coffee in this country, at least it is still there! Also, what has happened to the rest of the upstairs space?
