St Thomas Crescent

St Thomas Crescent is just off St Thomas’ Street. According to google maps, the street has the apostrophe and the Crescent doesn’t. But if anyone knows better I will gratefully acknowledge :)

I believe that St Thomas Crescent was used as the location for Tony Hill’s home in the TV adaptation of Wire in the Blood.

I wish I could afford to live here. Lovely road, central location, and the Trent House would be my local!

I think I’ve replied to all the comments from the couple of weeks or so now. Thank you all for being so understanding.

Oh – and I’ve added an ‘about newcastle upon tyne daily photo’ bit over there on the right. There are only two questions so far – what else would you like answering?

Edited (again) to add that there’s been a vote for Britain’s ‘most picturesque’ street. The Shambles in York won – deservedly, to my mind – but Grey Street came in third after the Royal Crescent in Bath. Full story here… I saw the story on the BBC this morning and meant to post it but completely forgot, so thanks to my dad for emailing it to me just now :)

Costa Coffee/Northumberland Road

Northumberland Road, which links Northumberland Street with John Dobson Street and beyond, is a pretty dull road. I’ve been wanting to post a pic of it for a while, but couldn’t make it interesting enough.

Then I went for a coffee in Costa Coffee (I usually frequent Starbucks, but it was too busy to get a seat that day) and spotted this shot. It looks pretty good like this :)

Just to keep you all up to date – I heard about the illumination of Hadrian’s Wall a few weeks back but someone had got their wires crossed and thought it had happened already. I’m really glad I’ve not missed it. I’ll be in Wallsend on Saturday night for the beginning.

Two picture Sunday – Neville Hall

The plaque reads:

Hadrian’s Wall.
Within this plot, covered by red concrete stand the lower courses of the south face of Hadrian’s Wall. Built first in A.D.122 from Newcastle upon Tyne to Bowness on Solway, and afterwards extended to Wallsend, a distance in all of 80 Roman miles.

And if you look closely, you can see a reflection of the Union Rooms that I recently featured.

Mark Toney’s on Grainger Street. I haven’t been there in years. I remember the last time I was there (I reckon about 9-10 years ago) I had a lovely mushroom omelette. (Yes, it was that nice. I should go back.)

sunset

Taken by my husband, of the sunset over the roofs of Jesmond.

I just wanted to say that I know I don’t reply to comments here as much as I used to. Since last November, I am not the same chatty, cheerful self as I was before, and to be honest, by the time I get home from work I’m too mentally exhausted to chat like that. But I just wanted to say that I love reading all the comments you make, and I’m glad that you all still talk amongst yourselves. Hopefully one day I’ll feel more talkative again.

I promised to do this a while ago – sorry for the delay Chris. Chris, who posts here as CGP, has started an excellent new blog of Newcastle. It compares old pictures of Newcastle with what is there now. I think it’s a really exciting project and really complements what Cassandra and I do on this site.

The blog is here and is called Oldcastle Newcastle. Please do pop by and see what you think.

March Theme Day – Passageway

passageway

This passageway links Nun Street with Newgate Street and is called Nuns Lane. This is taken from the Nun Street side, looking towards Newgate Street. It’s a pretty grotty alleyway, usually, but with sunlight cascading through it looks almost pleasant.
