Clayton Street Week – Charlotte Square
This square is between Clayton Street and Stowell Street (the main street of Chinatown). It always seems peaceful, even though it’s right in the centre of town. But I might just have been there in those rare moments when things are quiet

It’s always seems to have been a quiet little backwater as I don’t think many people go that way unless they have business there. I must admit I had forgotten it was there.
Since it has, in the last couple of years, been ‘opened out’ with the removal of one of the sides to the garden and the building of the quite grand steps, etc, it has changed completely.
It is now (while retaining its peaceful charm) a lot more accesible and much more used than hitherto.
While “a lot more used” now, it is still (as said by Beth & Alf) a relatively peaceful area.
One big benefit of it being ‘more open’ now, is that we have lost most of the ‘dossers’ that used to hang about there a lot, bless them!!
I used to be one of those who visited it regularly, as the Solicitor dealt with tribunals et al.
It is so nice to see it cleaned up and looking shipshape.
I always wondered if the Square was named after Queen Charlotte?
I remember the name, but I have no recollection at all of that view. It must have changed a lot.
