brewery

This photos will make many readers rue the passage of time. These are some of the old brewery buildings, where they used to make Newcastle Brown Ale. I still cannot believe that they demolished these buildings. There used to be a beautiful one that had a clock on the front. I can’t believe I never took a picture of it. I used to work nearby, and I watched them tearing down the buildings. I had thought they were going to leave that one. I was devastated when it went. Rather early on, if I remember rightly.

If you look closely you can also spot the statue of Jackie Milburn.

  1. It is sad that Broon is no longer brewed in the Toon. It was bad enough when it moved to Gateshead but Yorkshire? Is nothing sacred. I always remember the smell on brew days, you could almost taste the beer in the air.

  2. Being on t’other side of river, Fed special was the drink and as Dad, Uncles, om Cobley and all where ‘club’ members, Fed it was. But a Bottle of Brown ale went into the stew, chrismas cake, empty glass sweet jar with morello cherries and a half glass of brandy (drunk on NYE.s). Fed did just not have the ‘bottle’.

Where did ‘Wor Jackie’s stature end up?

Beth I just love your photos and the people who visit this site with their lovely comments and memories.

  3. Mrs. K, I was brought up in the club tradition too and Fed Special was always a favourite but I sampled my fair share of the Broon over the years. I was working for the Fed Brewery when they laid the foundations for the Dunston brewery although I left before it was completed. Shame as it would have been nice living and working in Gateshead.

Wor Jackie has ended up roughly where Corporation Street, Blenheim Street, Wellington Street and Bath Lane all meet.
