This is the Central Loft building, just round the corner from Dance City as featured yesterday. Does anyone know whether the building used to be anything previously, or has it always been residential?

Apparently you can rent serviced apartments there as well as buy apartments. I’d love to see inside – although I suspect the rooms are pretty small.

  1. The doorway in the bottom picture used to lead to Rockshots, and the basement (now a car park for the flats) used to be the Powerhouse. I’m beginning to think it might be me as my two favourite nightclubs in Newcastle have been turned into car parks, the Powerhouse and the Mayfair.

I remember going to the Powerhouse when I came out, Friday nights were high energy and 80′s music with DJ Mega Sal, Saturdays were more clubby with DJ Stuart, the Village bar was also downstairs. It was a god night out as long as you didn’t mind your feet sticking to the floor! :-)

  2. i used to go to Bulletproof at Rockshots back on the late ’90s/early ’00s. had many a happy night in there.
never went to the Mayfair much but i was a regular at the Riverside – that’s offices now.

there was a Laser Quest in that building too (Central Loft).

  3. LASER QUEST!!!!! YES!!! i had remembered that as being the other side of the road but of course it wasn’t! i was terrible at that :)

i loved the riverside and the mayfair. don’t remember ever going to rockshots for some reason.

D and i got together at the riverside :)

  4. Great! I’m not too familiar with this building, although I know exactly where you mean. I’ve been enjoying flicking through all your snowy shots as I haven’t been on here for a while!

  5. In the 1970s, it was a multi-screen cinema, called “Studios 1, 2, 3 and 4″.

I remember it being very neon lit, with huge cinema signs illuminated along the entire front of the building!

As part of the Cinemas set-up (same owners) there was also a bar called “Hofbrauhaus” and a club called “Scamps”.

All of these closed in the early 1980s, with the ‘Scamps’ area becoming ‘Rockshots’.

  6. Hofbrauhaus – cheerts Peter I know exactly where this is now, and of course I remember the Studios too.

I think the bar was also known as Zoots for a while.

  7. Your welcome!

I used this place as a “Quiz Question” in posts 776 to 778, with a great then-and-now photo comparison, in Post 789!
