Took this from a multi storey car park in Grainger Town a week or so back. Does anyone know what they’re building? Is it something to do with Science City?

  1. The construction taking place, now well advanced, is called DOWNING PLAZA.

Here is the Skyscraper City thread about Downing Plaza. There are new photos (of the construction) appearing on this thread, almost weekly . . .

Downing Plaza is effectively the gateway to the ‘Science Central’ site, which itself is the principal physical location of the ‘Science city’ project.

The ‘Science Central’ (proper) construction (unlike Downing Plaza) has not yet started, but here is the Skyscraper City thread which explains all about it . . .

To summarise . . . Science Central, plus Downing Plaza, plus the new “Sandeman Hotel” next door, which is the 1960s ‘curved’ office building former HQ of S&N in Newcastle, will (when completed) together form a really large new extension to the existing City Centre.

A very exciting series of construction and refurbishment projects, now underway!

  2. Nice shot! I think it is the Science City; not sure though!

    Hope you’re well.

  3. For anyone confused Peter’s links meant I had to approve his comment and before I saw it to approve it Dave commented :)

Thanks so much for all that information Peter :)

Glad you like the pic Dave!

  4. Is this where they’re drilling for the thermal spring to heat buildings with?

I love the contrast between the old buildings at the front and the really modern at the back, Beth.

  5. Sue – The ‘Science Central’ part of the site is indeed where they currently drilling for hot water beneath the ground. Posts 146 onward on the “Science City/Science Central” thread (the 2nd of the two linked in my previous post) covers this.

It could be a very beneficial discovery, and they have an excellent opportunity on that empty part of the site (where part of the old S & N Brewery was) to drill to their hearts content, before any construction of buildings begins there.
