Quiz Day 7 – Five Swans and sign

March 20, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  8 Comments

five-swans

I wasn’t sure whether to do the quiz for five days or seven. But you all seem to have enjoyed it, and I’ve enjoyed doing it, so I decided to do seven :)

Well done to Peter (and honourable mention to dougbowski once more; you do seem to know everything!) – for the answer to yesterday’ question, namely that the new Wetherspoons pub where Luckies and Paris Texas used to be is called ‘The Five Swans’ after this statue.

onwards

Today is the final day of the quiz, but if you’ve all enjoyed it I’ll do another one soon? Where can this sign be found? And what is it?

Quiz Day 6 – Council Chamber and Swans

civic

Alf got the first part of the question right and Dougbowski the second – well done! The lines are on the outside of the Civic Centre’s Council Chamber. You can see a picture I took of the inside here – I took it on the Tyne and Wear Heritage Open Day tour there in 2008. I remember when I was there they told us loads about what the chamber was made from and how it was really efficient at sound reflection and pretty energy saving – generally quite ahead of its time! – but I’ve no idea where the notebook is that I made notes in, unfortunately. It’s well worth a visit and doing a tour if you get the chance.

swans

Today’s question! Why are these swans topical in this vicinity* right now?

Quiz Day 5: Logo and Lines

March 18, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  3 Comments

logo2

So I think everyone who posted yesterday is right on one level or another – this used to be painted on the sides of metro cars, and – as Alf pointed out – is still in use on the side of one car, unit 4001. (I only took the picture about a month ago, so it’s definitely been in use until very recently!) I was thinking it was the logo for the old Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority and that it’d been out of service for some time – but according to this link it actually still existed a mere three years ago. So I’m going to say that everyone who posted yesterday was right :)

For those wondering what the passenger transport authority was, today’s version is Nexus – to quote from their website: ‘Nexus is the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive and administers funds on behalf of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority.’ So that clears that up!

If anyone wants to come along and add some more detail, then they would be welcome to….

lines

Today’s question is much harder – at least I think so! Where will you find these lines?? And if that’s too easy, what is inside?

Quiz Day 4 – library and logo

March 17, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  8 Comments

library

Sam Judson got there first – this is where the old library was, not long after it was demolished, and where the new Central Library now stands. This picture shows Bewick Court which should give away the location to anyone who wasn’t sure before. And Dougbowski was pretty close on the time it was taken – he said July 2007; it was actually taken on 14 June 2007 which I think deserves a point for anyone keeping score!

You can see pictures of the new library from roughly the same angle here and here.

logo

Again it might be a bit easy for some of you :) What’s this?

If that is too easy you can tell me when it would have been used until (although that’s a bit of a cheat as I’m not sure of the answer myself!!).

Quiz Day 3 – Marker and building site

March 16, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  10 Comments

marker

Dougbowski was spot on again – this marker is in the grounds of the Civic Centre (the Hancock Museum is visible at the top left of this pic). Not at the south east corner of the Town Moor, although I kind of feel I should award Sam Judson a mark for trying! Incidentally, though, did the Town Moor used to stretch all the way down to here, or has the marker been moved? And this is a genuine question, I have no idea of the answer :)

building-site

Today’s question should be relatively easy. This picture is from a few years ago. What stands here now?

If you find that too easy, then you can say roughly when this pic was taken, too :)

Quiz Day 2: Victoria Tunnel and sign

March 15, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  7 Comments

hancock

Dougbowski was spot on – this is the entrance to the Victoria Tunnel that can be found outside the Hancock/Great North Museum on Claremont Road.

boundary-mark

Today’s question! This sign says ‘This boundary mark is one of many erected in the 18th century to define the Town Moor, Nuns Moor and Castle Leazes. It now marks the approximate position of the south east corner of the Town Moor and is erected here to remind the citizens of Newcastle upon Tyne of the extent of their heritage.’

Where can this boundary mark be found?

Quiz Day 1: Door

door

The first question has two parts: a) Where is this door? and b) What does it lead to?

Answers in the comments please :)

Dog Leap Stairs

dog-leap-stairs

I took this pic maybe three years ago, but they haven’t really changed.

On googling I found out that the first link that comes up is a photo on this site, kinda. You can see it here – but the link that comes up on google is here.

Quiz will start tomorrow! I hope you enjoy it :)

Grainger Market when closed

March 12, 2011  |  Newcastle upon Tyne  |  5 Comments

grainger

Just to be clear, this was taken on a Sunday; the market hasn’t closed down or anything. But I was walking past and the market seemed empty and sad through the gates, so I took this picture.

Is anyone up for a bit of a picture quiz next week? Question one day, then answer and new question the next? I think Cassandra’s done it before and it was fun :)
