28th September 1849

Today (it’s still before midnight, shut up!!!!) is the 162nd anniversary… of Queen Victoria opening the High Level Bridge.

These plaques, however, are in Central Station. I’m not quite sure what’s going on there! I found some discussion of it on SkyscraperCity here but it doesn’t seem to come to any actual conclusion.

Some sources give the grand opening date as 27th. but the contemporary account says 28th. not 23rd. as stated on Skyscraper City. None of this explains why it should be commemorated in the Central Station which was not even completed at that time. I hate an unsolved mystery but I doubt we will ever know the full facts.
