It’s not just the dodgy headgear that gives it away. It’s the fact that even last week, I could walk into town along this path from Jesmond metro and see one or two other people at the most. Today it was pretty busy. It’ll probably get more so, while the students get to know Newcastle and go to all the events put on for them, before quietening down when they all start lectures.
The left hand side of the path is the cycle lane, which is why most people are on the right.

That headgear made me laugh! What did he do, stick balloons on a bike helmet? :D
Despite the noise, crowds and traffic, I love it when students come back to campus after their breaks. Their youthful energy is a joy and very infectious.
I too love it when the Students come back, it does make Newcastle feel young and vibrant, and gives it a much nicer atmosphere around the place. We are lucky to have 2 outstanding world class University’s right in the middle of the city centre which hosts these bright young people. Also Northumbria are currently building a multi-milion pound sports centre which is enormous and on 3 floors, with state-of-the-art facilities not just for the Students, but for the wider community of Newcastle. Everyone can use it! - B I think you like swimming? It will have a state-of-the-art pool.
See this article, the sheer size of the building (on 3 floors too) compared to what’s there already…

Mike.
If you all keep going on about how great it is up here - we might get swamped.
Just ‘gan canny’ we have been a well kept secret (or just plain ignored) for years. Those people who did dare venture up North, loved it, stayed and kept the myth going that up here was all coal, dirty, cold and the people spoke funny.
It did us no harm - it left us with happiness that we were here and they were not.
Ah, I remember that cyclepath too well. I used to live just around the corner. Never wore such beautiful headgear as a student, though.
I don’t mind the students - it’s Freshers’ week I don’t like, with the people everywhere trying to lure everyone into bars. Last year they were all scantily clad women. Hate hate hate.
Mike, that will be quite big!
Mrs K, when Newcastle is the only UK city to rate in a top ten party cities chart, I think that cat’s out of the bag and has been for a long time now. Luckily the prejudice of certain southerners against the north works in our favour :)
Daniel, heh! Whereabouts did you live?
