I love the gold seahorses on the sides of the benches down Northumberland Street. They’re part of the City Council’s coat of arms.

I once had someone email me randomly saying they’d like to start supporting NUFC. I think they were from the US. No real reason, I think they’d just read something about us or maybe had a relative from the region or something.
Before I could reply, I had a second email from them. Essentially along the lines of “Wait a minute, I just looked at the club crest and it’s got f*cking seahorses on it. I mean f*cking seahorses. How can anyone take a team seriously with f*cking seahorses on the badge. That’s just so damn gay.”
Etc. Etc. Etc.
Some people really shouldn’t be allowed near a keyboard.
That is the most bizarre thing I’ve heard all year. Seahorses are amazing. D’you think it’s because of the male seahorses carrying the babies thing? That’s the only thing I can think that would make them gay. Except, y’know, not.
I can only nod and concur to your final sentence :)
How sweet! I would have never noticed them. I love seahorses, they are the cutest things ever. Some people are so horrible. I do not understand the gay connection….and as if “gay” were a sort of illness. How horrible. Ciao, Beth. A.
They’re worth looking out for Antonella. And you’re right, it’s not like ‘gay’ should be an insult of any kind at all. It really upsets me when I think about how ubiquitous an insult it is for kids these days. Must be so, so hard for gay kids to come out to their friends - even harder than it was a decade ago, and it must’ve been bloody hard then :o(
I remember those ones. Thanks for this blog it reminds me when I studied in Newcastle :)
