I mentioned a while ago that I should look up more. That Newcastle’s a rewarding city to look up in.
Here’s more proof of that. I have no idea if these buildings have always been this colour, or if they’ve been painted recently. The colours look to me as if they belong in Scandinavia somewhere, not Newcastle city centre.
The buildings are on Northumberland Street, opposite the Northern Rock building pictured yesterday.
I agree - the strong colours make the buildings seem continental!
It is odd how two identical buildings can look so different. Mind you, although I like the bright one, the more conventional one is well done too.
I want to paint the one on the right with a brighter yellow ;)
Just curious: are the levels above the shops part of the shop (storage, office) or are they apartments?

Hi, Before reading your comment, I thought this shot looks taken from a Northern German Town, an Hanseatic one like Hamburg for example. Some other part of NC remeind me of Hamburg or even Hannover…have a nice weekend. Ciao. A.
I’m not sure but I don’t think there’s any apartments in this part of town (ie Northumberland St)…..but in other parts of the central city area there’s pockets of ‘living over the shop’ developments. But I’m guessing there’s still lots of underused space out there!
To me, it looks like this is in fact one building that was later separated, maybe between to heirs or something, who went on and painted their respective halves in the colour they liked.

Skylines are the best way to age a building. Shop fronts change but top levels end to stay the same. It defnitely wasn’t that colour in 2001-3.

Daniel, you’re quite possibly right, although I hadn’t thought of that. Definitely built as one (or as a pair). I wonder if the building to the left was like that too and then knocked down/restructured? No idea about a bright orange shop… will keep eye out!
