Lamp post on Northumberland Street.
Notice the castles at the top? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: people should look up more in Newcastle.

Does anyone have any idea what this is? For anyone who can’t make out the writing, it says: RNIB supporting blind and partially sighted people

RNIB Royal National Institute for the Blind (people)
I Googled it!
That wasn’t what I meant :) it looks like an alarm box on a lamp post and it has a little blue light on - I was wondering if it gives out some kind of signal so blind people don’t walk into it - but that sounds a little unlikely! But thanks anyway :)
Some time ago I read in the Yorkshire Post about talking lamposts which provide blind people with information about their location. Could this be one of them? Ciao. A.
I was doing a bit of ‘looking up’ just last week and spotted the same lamp post (outside Monument Mall entrance?) and I wondered what it was too. It’s right next to one of those info booth affairs, so maybe there’s some connection as Antonella suggested?
would it have some kind of chip installed in it so that blind people using a cane or other device can pick up the signal and it transmits the info via audio to the person.

We have a few of them around my home town, at first I thought it was some sort of listening device, to spy on us, but check the above link and I think it should answer your questions
