Plummer Tower on Croft Street.
The plaque says ‘The Plummer Tower, built in the late thirteenth century, was granted in 1742 to the Company of Masons who partly rebuilt it. The only surviving two story tower’.
The plaque says ‘Tyne and Wear County Council’. That hasn’t existed since 1986.

Next door there used to be an old style fish and chippy. The telephone exchange, which has history, is in Carlio Square. Guess where most of their customers came from. It was so small, there potatoes were delivered peeled and washed, they just had to chip them. The fish was delivered from North Shields every day - so it was fresh. The upstairs was served by a ‘dumb waiter’ - so you ordered and paid downstairs, scrambled up the crooked stairs and waited.
Happy memories and you keep on bringing them back!!!!
I love reading your old memories Mrs K. Anything in particular you’d like to see?
