I’ve mentioned before on this site, more than once, that Newcastle is a very rewarding city to look up in.
Recently I looked up and noticed that this row of buildings, curving round from Blackett Street onto Grey Street, is called the Eldon Building.
I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to notice. (And I do hope you’ll forgive me that the photo is at a slight angle.)
Grey’s Monument can be seen to the right of the top photo; the sign for Monument Metro can be seen at the bottom left.

In the mid 70’s there was a complex of bars within the Eldon buidings, i worked in the basement bar. Upstairs i remember was a Gay bar. Does anybody else remember this? I recall the big hit of that year was ‘I’m not in love’ by 10 cc, it was played relentlessly! A very hot summer…
I’m a bit young for that Katie! anyone else?
I don’t remember the name, but I remember being taken there by a couple of friends in the mid 80’s - we always kept to the gay bars because we felt safer than in some of the straight bars of the time.
Well I remember a while ago this place was called the ‘Eldon Grill’ - the upstairs has been a restaurant for as long as I can remember. A lot of people I know still refer to it as the ‘Eldon’.
Apparently it was a restaurant as far back as 1900 but it’s a grand building isn’t it?
I do remember when it had a gay bar but I can’t for the moment remember what it was called then - if it comes back to me I’ll let you know!
I had my first glass of’ Russian Tea’ in the Eldon Grill. My first cocktail in the ‘Pineapple Lounge’.
I must have moved on as I don’t recall a ‘Gay Bar’ - but in those days the gays hung out mostly in the West End. Loved the anti-spam word ‘kitten’ I just love cats, big little, wild or tame. Purrrrrrrrrrrr
I
Thanks all for sharing the memories - they are good to hear!
