This is one of the markets that regularly takes place at Monument. Bonus - you can see the lower part of Grey’s Monument and the lovely Waterstones (a bookshop) building in the background!
Edited to add: this was the Green and Ethical Trade Market which has now been to Newcastle two years running. I hope it returns next year - I’ll let you know if so!

Another superb mix, well done. Emerson Chambers is such an imposing building. I never knew there was a market at Monument. How long has it been going on? Is it on a Saturday? I think it has been too long since I wandered through the town.
That’s great and I too love the Emerson Chambers building making a cameo at the back there.
I’ve only seen this market once (last winter I think it was) - is this on now Beth? It’s a great idea, and a great location for it.
Cheers, D
…and I hope you’ve noticed that there is some more green ‘twiddly-ness’ in this shot ;)
Date taken: 8th June. Which, according to my computer’s calendar, was a Monday. I seem to remember being in Newcastle later that week and it was still there. Have just googled and found this - apparently it wasn’t one of the regular markets but a green and ethical trade market! There is also a farmers’ market the first Friday of every month which takes place at Monument, as well as the Quayside Market (which I’ve never looked round properly before) and the Armstrong Bridge craft market every Sunday (weather permitting) over Jesmond Dene. Anyone interested in pics of any of the above?
So Alf, to answer your question (and Dave’s too for that matter), for the market at Monument it’s the first Friday of the month. There are also markets leading up to Christmas but they are not for a while yet :)
I hadn’t noticed the green twiddliness! It gets everywhere :)
Green Twiddly bits = copper gone green over the years. Anyone fancy cleaning it with Daddies Sauce?
Thanks for that info Beth!
Ah Mrs K thanks - I see now, the copper must have oxidised or something. Daddies Sauce - good tip!
Yes, I’d be interested in shots of those markets Beth if ever you’re there! It’s years since I’ve been to either… I think you’d like the Armstrong Bridge one especially.
I had no idea Mrs K - thanks for that!
You’re welcome Dave. I’ll just watch you clean I think :)
I’ve got some pics somewhere of the Armstrong bridge market and you’re right, I loved it - but it was a miserable day. I’ll try for a sunny one sometime!
