I’ve never noticed this plaque before last Tuesday. It’s been there 9 years so that’s quite unobservant of me.

Wow, 1850. That is very early so far as trains go. Somewhere down south must have wanted something Newcastle produced……..let us guess.
Andrew, I think it was locomotives and or coal MikeM
MikeM I think Andrew might have been rather tongue in cheek when saying that :)
It’s an amazing heritage isn’t it? Something for the north to be proud of.
Was nearby last night, popped into The Centurion for a quick beer!
I think I remember reading somewhere that Newcastle Station was the first ever station built primarily for the purpose of carrying passengers. I might be wrong, but I don’t think we’d be far behind given Stockton to Darlington was the world’s first railway (used for industrial purposes).
Beth, I do tend to bite, probably because I come from down that end of the country. I do remember however that the GWR was reliant on the Stevenson factory for some early locomotives, and one of its early engineers came from Ashington. MikeM
Haven’t been in the centurian for an age Dave - all these pubs I’ll have to visit again!
People write the north east off Rob but its been at the cutting edge of many inventions and breakthroughs in the past and still is now - this is the only example I can think of off the top of my head (I’m exhausted and very full after a BBQ this afternoon!) but I’m sure there are many more.
MikeM, no worries :)
