This was the queue outside Magic Box the middle of last week. There aren’t too many places in Newcastle that stock Halloween outfits!
I’d never noticed the lettering on the top of the building before. I’ll get a better shot next time I’m passing with my proper camera (this was taken with my mobile).

I almost rented the flat above the shop. I went with the one in Sandyford because I didn’t want to be in the city centre, especially so close to St. James Park. I’m glad I choose Sandyford, it was so quiet and there was the park nearby and was a great neighborhood.
T Howe & Co carriage Proprietors, eh?
Percy Street West, 11,13 - 21, Percy Street, City Centre,
Ward: Westgate
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The buildings of Percy Street West are all brick
structures, which are now used as shops and pubs. The designs vary from building
to building, although a coherent style is maintained in several of the buildings.
Number 11 stands out from the other buildings in the vicinity. It is a two storey
brick building with an attic and stone decoration contrasting with the red brick
material. The building is now divided into two shops, but was originally the premises
of a carriage works and still bears the sign ‘Carriage Proprietors. T Howe & Co.
Carriage Proprietors’. The building is also significant as the original home of the
People’s Theatre when it was set up in the early 1900s as the ‘Clarion Dramatic
Club’.
There’s also an intriguing story about Rolls Royce parts and the company on pages 13-14 here: http://www.rrec-northeast.co.uk/nl_jul_aug_09.pdf
Quite a lot of the older buildings in Newcastle still bear their original (or past) names, you just have to remember to look up!
Beth, I am glad to see that you have combined two of my favourite things about your Newcastle photographs, quirky little shops and remembering to look up.
AW - no twiddly green bits.
Glad your back on form.
Just think when I was young Halloween was a turnip hollowed out with the stump of a candle. Apple bobbing and that was it. Now Bonfire night - that was something else.
I used to have a flat above a beer shop. I loved it. Note, a beer shop and not an offy!!!! But yeah, Sandyford is nice, and still very handy for the city centre. And thanks for finding that Cas!
Elaine, I do regularly post ‘looking up’ pics. Newcastle is indeed a FANTASTIC city to look up in!
Thank you Alf :)
Mrs K - I’ll find some more green twiddly bits soon :) THanks, I’m glad to be back on form ;) We did bobbing for apples and ducking for apples too! Fun! :)
