This is the Grand Hotel Building. It currently consists of a Newcastle University coffee shop, Blackwell’s Bookshop, a sandwich shop that I used to love but haven’t frequented in years (is it still any good? anyone?) and the Crow’s Nest pub.
When I first moved to Newcastle it was Inventions. That was quite a while ago now.

Never knew it was the Grand Hotel! Nice bit of info (as ever). Apparently it was the Crows Nest that pub many years ago; the name is carved into the masonry I think somewhere.
Well, just had big catch up from week gone yesterday. Lots of lovely pictures and its made me happy to be looking in again.
I just could not resist giving you this link - mind you might already have it.

Dave - look at the top of the building next time you’re passing :) Also, the Crow’s Nest masonry - does it look something like this?!
thanks mrs k :) And thank you so much for that link - it’s amazing! well worth clicking through :)
Ha yes that’s what I was on about!
Well as it happens Beth I had to go to the RVI this morning (business I should add!) and afterwards I was at Haymarket… anyway I did look again at this place ans saw the Grand Hotel wording…. honestly I can’t believe I haven’t noticed that before!
I remember Blackwell’s in its previous incarnation as Thorne’s Students’ Bookshop. That was when we still had apostrophes and knew how to use them. I used to get all my textbooks there in my student days. It also had a wonderful section for artists’ requisites, as they think they were called in the old days. I don’t remember it is an hotel even in my young days although judging from Mrs. K’s link it would have been out of my range anyway. I don’t know about the sandwich shop but Mark Toney is just down the street a bit and they have the best ice cream in Newcastle.
Dave -the first time I noticed the ‘Grand Hotel’ wording I couldn’t believe I’d never seen it before either. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again; it’s always worth looking up in Newcastle….. ;)
Alf - start a Society for the Correct Placement of Apostrophes and I will join like a shot. It bugs the life out of me to see them misused (of course I’m asking for someone to link to a post in which I’ve misused an apostrophe aren’t I?!). The apostrophes in that shop name make me truly happy :)
