Beth, a lovely shot but I am going to be completely predictable and opt for for the Grand Hotel. It has character which King’s Gate does not. It just doesn’t fit with the Newcastle I know and love. But I bet King’s Gate is a lot more “user friendly” than the Grand Hotel building. I will just have to resign myself to being an old fogey.
Nice street scene shot! I admire the fancy ironwork fence along the sidewalk - like little castle towers! I prefer the historic building to the “new” building
I’m going to sit on the fence and say I prefer the old one but I think the new one might be a “grower” - I like the way the’ve put the stonework on the ends of the buidings to try (kind of!) to reflect the building next to it.
And the railings are beautful - whoever designed those deserves a special mention :)
Hurray!, the lego men are rubble…
Yes the hotel has more heritage and character about it and the Uni building has none. But certainly better than what was there before - a car park.
Alf, to be fair, I’d be surprised if anyone went for the new building :) Having said that though, I think there’s variety enough in Newcastle for the new building to fit. There are some beautiful buildings, but the M&S and BHS buildings on Northumberland Street are awful. King’s Gate is FAR nicer than them.
Thanks Leif. Many of the railings in Newcastle are in this style. I do love them.
Sue, you may be right - it might well stand the test of time :) And again I really do love the railings!
Mike - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! I loved the lego men! I’m still really upset that they’ve gone. I will however agree with you about the car park :)
You know, I like them both very much. Maybe it is a bit extreme having them next door to one another though.
…and I for one won’t mourn the passing of the lego men at all! ;)
Beth - just spotted your comment about that truly terrible BHS / Primark thing, and the M&S - you are so right. It is possible to have decent modern building, but yes, that BHS is really awful!
