This pic is about a year old. I’m posting it because this building has now been demolished, as I mentioned in yesterday’s comments. I think it’s really sad.
I liked this tribute.

about Jesmond Picture House ... posted by Beth
aw, i didn’t know it was gone :(
i used to get the metro past there to whitley bay about 10 years ago and always thought it could be used for something as it was a fantastic building and handily close to a metro stop. maybe convert it to a live music venue like they did with the academy in town.
i didn’t realise it was going until one morning in november when for longwinded reasons my husband dropped me off at west jesmond metro. i was very upset.
such a waste.
The one and only time I went was to see Passenger 57. Only the upstairs balcony was open and the downstairs area was a complete tip. I can see why it died a death, but it’s still a shame.
Want to see what it looks like inside (or did in Dec 2008)?

Sadly, they’ve not “done” the Odeon. Oh, I so wish I had the gumption to go in there…
Interesting follow-up on yesterday’s pic. And a sad occasion, indeed.
I don’t know what was wrong with my PC, Beth. It just didn’t load your site for some reason. It’s working again now. Strange.
It is a crying shame but I think that we have to accept that purpose-built cinemas are very difficult to convert in to anything else. In one of yesterday’s comments I mentioned 14 cinemas in Gateshead and I can only think of two that survived to be put to other uses. There are some excellent photographs of old cinemas in Newcastle on this site:

Thanks for the links Mosh, I’d seen them years ago but had forgotten about them. I’m glad they’re still online.
Alf I have read two pages of that thread and I will have to stop else I will stay on the computer forever. I love Newcastle so much and love seeing the old pictures. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the update MikeM!! I’m glad things worked out well :)
