The theme for this month is wood. I had great plans of getting to Jesmond Dene and taking a picture in the woods there, but never got round to it. This tree is outside Osborne’s bar on Osborne Road in Jesmond.

about February Theme Day - Wood ... posted by Beth
It reminds me of a triffid, if anybody remembers what they were. It sounds like a good theme though, we are not short of trees in Newcastle, surprisingly.
Lovely strength to these branches, Beth. And nice neon glows …
such a strong tree and to survive outside a bar. nature and humans can exist it seems.
That’s just how my theme day plans usually unravel, Beth… A very nice picture you chose instead, I like the green glow on the bark.
What a great theme! Who wood have thought it? (Sorry about that!)
Such a shame the Jesmond Picture House has gone; I can’t believe that I never ever went, and now of course never will. Great link to that YouTube video Beth.
I can’t believe the Odeon is being razed too - surely it could have been re-used…
Beth, I have just noticed your request for clarification on getting in to the pictures for a jam jar on a previous thread. Until fairly recently all glass jars and bottles carried a deposit. If you took them back to the shops you got a few pennies in return. My Dad reckoned that in the 20s and 30s some cinemas would actually admit you in exchange for a jar or bottle. They presumably took them back in bulk the next day and collected the money to add to their box-office takings.
OK, I will come clean - I and my mates, lived near a jam factory. They had a yard full of jam jars. By Saturday morning, if we did not have enough jam jars to get into the matinee, we used to move a loose board, send the littlest one in - get the jam jars, replace the board, go round to the office and sell the jam jars back to the factory. 1p for a 1lb jar and 2p for a 2lb. Then off to the pictures for the Sat matinee. Jam Factory long closed down.
Thanks to all who like the tree :)
Dave, terrible pun!! :) And yes, it’s pretty miserable that these buildings are just being demolished - I hope something decent appears in their places.
Alf/Mrs K, thanks for enlightening me/coming clean :) What a great story! Shame you couldn’t get away with such things these days :)
