I love to walk along High Bridge, it is full of quirky little shops. Some of them change hands quite frequently but Aitken Electronics seems to have been there forever and is full of the most amazing electrical gear. High Bridge also contains two of my favourite pubs from the 60s. Stokoe’s (better known as the Duke of Wellington) and the Back Turk’s also known as the Chain Locker (now The Lane, I believe). The Royal Turk’s Head was a plush hotel on Grey Street from which a dingy corridor gave access to the Back Turk’s and on to High Bridge. It is also reputed that the Beatles wrote “She Loves You” while staying at the Turk’s although it may have been the Imperial at Jesmond. We shall never know as the surviving members can’t remember.
Mr. Stone- you thoughtfully contribute so many thoughtful & insighful stories to this site I always look forward to reading your comment while learning some new about Newcastle Upon Tyne history.
Really enjoyed hearing the Beatles bit of trivia-I now know which tune will be stuck in my head for the remainder of the day…ya, ya, ya
