This is Wallsend’s Town Hall, which celebrated its centenary 18 months ago. I’ll have to try and get to it on the next Heritage Open Days.

A close up of the clock.
Also, I’ve been chatting more on the facebook fan page. If you’re on facebook, do become a fan! You can suggest things you’d like to see pictured as well as discuss the perennial ‘how far outside Newcastle should this blog feature’ question. I’m happy to receive requests by email obviously - burningthepast at gmail dot com - or in the comments, as well.

I see we have a bit of a town hall theme going. Quite a lovely old stately building. I do have a small gripe. I wish business owners wouldn’t put up posters, announcements etc. on the windows. I see this all the time and in my opinion, it is so unsightly. This public building isn’t too bad but even one poster is an eyesore.
On the subject of how far out of Newcastle do you venture- I for one love a road trip now and then….
Where are we going?
Alf
Forget the road trip.
Have you forgotten we are going down the river?
When the weather gets better. I am looking forward to it.
Nice shots - nice building! Haven’t seen this at all! As ever this site is an education to me.
I am on Fan on Facebook so will take another look Beth!
Lovely photos. I’d be quite happy to walk along the green in Whitley Bay! Ciao. A.
Beth, did you get to the see the other side of the building which housed the old fire station? It is equally impressive. Then just along the road is the Coach and Horses which used to be an excellent pub although it is a good 20 years since I was in it. Another fine building set back from the High Street is the neo-classical Burnside School. There are lots of nice places in Wallsend, it surprises a lot of people who think of it purely in terms of shipyards and factories. Segedunum is well worth a visit too. I am starting to sound like a tour guide.
ash - people seem happy for me to venture quite some way outside! but seeing as i even neglect the opposite side of newcastle i think i should get out there before i go further afield. but as always, requests gratefully accepted… within reason of course :)
mrs k - we’ll be going up the river soon enough ;)
thanks dave!
antonella, i will get out there soon!
alf - not when i took this pic but i was there again the other day and had a walk down - amazing isn’t it? i had no idea they were all there. and i’ve never been to segedunum but will be there at the weekend. maybe i’ll borrow a friend’s child to do the tour properly!
