Mark Toney’s on Grainger Street. I haven’t been there in years. I remember the last time I was there (I reckon about 9-10 years ago) I had a lovely mushroom omelette. (Yes, it was that nice. I should go back.)

Yes you should go back, it is a wonderful place. They serve the best ice cream in the north east, if not the world. I also recommend their bacon and brie rolls, they are superb. I must also declare an interest of sorts. My granddaughter’s partner’s great grandfather (are you following this) came over from Italy with the original Mark Toney (Antonio Marcantonio) and worked with him for a while in setting up his ice cream business. Had things turned out a little differently I might have been entitled to free ice cream. Such is life.
Is the kiosk just inside Eldon Square off Monument still there? That used to be my treat for not kicking off when I was shipping with my parents. Almost always had the orange sorbet.
One of my favorite places to have a quick bite and it happens to be directly across from our bus stop which is an added bonus. We always have a coffee and their sandwiches are delicious (egg salad is de*lish) Beth, you really should re-visit the place. The second hand shop next door is a good place to pop into from time to time as well if you like that kind of thing, which I do.
At the end of this month, one weekday, a dirty old white volvo will be parked outside with a BDB. Inside will be me eating a ‘walnut glory’, drinking a frothy coffee and looking to see if there are ‘green twiddly bits opposite.
If they still do ‘French’ salad sandwiches, two will go home with me for consumption when the ice cream has subsided.
I did not know it was still there. Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Those French egg salad sandwiches are sooo good, right? I wish I could meet you there…have a great cup of coffee and help you look for any green twiddly bits across the street- I can never say that enough!
alf - free ice cream would have been great! and yes, i’ll go back soon.
mosh… i’m not sure. i think i’ve seen it recently. i’ll look properly next time i go past. also, it’s taken me til *justnow* to realise that ’shipping’ is a typo. i was really curious!!
ash - if i’m down that way i’m usually heading to either a) the station (and often the starbucks opposite!), b) the Union rooms (although i usually get there by metro) or c) one of the comic shops down there. for the hubby. i don’t read comics, but i get on well with the staff there. so there you go :)
glad to be the bearer of good news mrs k! :)
hmmm ash i think the green twiddlies are further up, but it’s hard to say for sure. we should all go check :)
