That’s one really pretty building.
I went inside here for the first time last year as part of a tour of the Lit and Phil - it’s beautiful on the inside as well - The Wood Memorial Hall - all carved dark wood and stained glass.
That is a fine shot of Neville Hall. I have never been inside it but I have been in the Lit and Phil many times and I was once in Bolbec Hall when it housed the coroner’s office. They are all beautiful buildings and it is a shame the rest of that side of Westgate Road, heading towards the Castle, has been allowed to fall in to disrepair.
glad you like it cassandra!
sue - i’ve not made it in for that yet but plan to this year if possible.
i’ve only been in the lit and phil once alf, but keep thinking i really should go again - i loved it on the heritage open days.
Hi All
Glad to hear you liked Neville Hall and the Wood Memorial Library. Hope you saw (or get to see) the lecture theatre that was completed in 1902. Currently the front (Neville Hall) is owned by the Masons, but the Mining Institute who own the library are currently trying to buy it. The library is open to visitors 10.00 - 16.00 during the week so you do not need to wait for the heritage days. 80 volunteers a week are helping to preserve and digitise the collection. The library or lecture theatre could be rented out for a meeting so I suggest that you contact the Librarian on 0191 233 2459, particulary if you have a large party, to see if it is open.
