The plaque reads:
Hadrian’s Wall.
Within this plot, covered by red concrete stand the lower courses of the south face of Hadrian’s Wall. Built first in A.D.122 from Newcastle upon Tyne to Bowness on Solway, and afterwards extended to Wallsend, a distance in all of 80 Roman miles.
And if you look closely, you can see a reflection of the Union Rooms that I recently featured.

You’ve done it again Beth! I’m beginning to think that I walk around with my eyes shut most of the time :) I walk this way most days on the way home and I’ve NEVER noticed the plaque about Hadrian’s Wall before……
but I have noticed the carving around the door and I love the scary creature on the right hand corner.
How curious that the man sculpture should be crouching! You don’t see that everyday, do you? Usually it’s some pontificating, toga-clad person.
I assume that’s a miner and it has something to do with that? You’d think it’d be something like the other miner over by City Hall.
It looks like there used to be another creature on the other end, sue!
I love the extra detail captured on these shots. It would be interesting to find out what, or who, the crouching figure represents and is that some sort of animal on the ledge to his left? I must have a closer look next time I am passing. There are more bits of Hadrian’s Wall in that area. I remember when I worked at the Federation Breweries behind the Central Station there was a large stretch of it running through the brewery. It was one of the reasons the Fed eventually built a new brewery in Dunston because expansion was severely restricted by the its presence.
sue - i sometimes think that i can see better with a camera in my hands than i do without. i’d never noticed the plaque about hadrian’s wall before (shh - don’t tell anyone - not even when i was taking the picture!!!!).
if you are going past again and want to tell me what the small text i couldn’t read properly said please do feel free…!
cassandra i never even thought of that. odd. if i get onto the tour for the heritage open days this year i’ll ask!
alf i really should explore the area behind the station. for some reason i never get any further than the telegraph….! and i had no idea that that had anything to do with the brewery moving to Gateshead - amazing what you find out!
Hi Beth, as i was strolling past tonight…. with eyes open this time :) ….. it just says something along the lines of, that the wall at this point was 10feet wide and 15 feet high and something about a “bubble core” …. that bit might be wrong…. it was very small writing and I was getting VERY odd looks from passers by :) should have gone in disguise!!
thanks sue! :) i get some VERY odd looks when taking pics sometimes :)
I think I might have been having a blonde moment - on reflection “rubble core” sounds more likely :)
